INTRO: International Neighbors is a 501c-3 nonprofit organization led by a diverse group of retired development specialists and others with a passion to help; and who use their skills—honed in Africa, Asia, the Mid-east and US—to take a fresh look at the needs and opportunities in West Africa. Today, twenty years after the upheaval of war in Liberia and Sierra Leone, indigenous women are taking risks to stand out—by leading organizations to empower women and girls to be healthy and well-educated. These women-led organizations struggle to scale up successful programs and to fill budgetary gaps. We believe that improving women’s lives uplifts whole communities, so we have chosen to focus our support on them.
OUR MISSION: is to build the capacity of local, non-profit organizations in West Africa to meet their goals through culturally sensitive training and mentorship to improve the lives and futures of young people and especially girls.
FOCUS: Because of the seldom-told history that links Liberia and the United States, we chose Liberia, one of the ten poorest countries in Africa, on which to concentrate. We support bridges between Liberian women-focused organizations and the wider world of resources. Our initial programs in Liberia center on teen and young women’s education and reproductive health. With the Rotary Clubs of Glen Ellyn, in 2024 we sent a commecial oven to a vocational program serving people with deveopmental disabilities.
VALUES: We endeavor to recognize the social customs & economic circumstances of the rural communities we seek to serve.
